Verjeana Jacobs on Museums Worth Exploring Near Bowie, MD
Take some time to these museums and learn about various cultures and history.

Whether you love history, science, or arts and culture, Bowie, Maryland has numerous museums in and around town that are worth exploring. Here are a few of my favorites.
- Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center
Located near Bowie in Brentwood, Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center (PGAAMCC) celebrates the “cultural and artistic contributions” of African Americans in and beyond Prince George’s County. You’ll find exhibits, workshops, and presentations all about honoring “black excellence.” Spend a day here and you’ll be left educated, enriched, and inspired.
- The Belair Mansion
The Belair Mansion is one of the oldest historic sites in Bowie. It was built in 1745 and now is home to a world of history within its walls. When you walk through the door, you’ll feel as if you’ve gone back in time. The mansion is designed to represent the lives of residents who lived from the mid-1700s until the mid-1950s. Among the treasures you will find are a Colonial Revival card table owned by William Woodward, a table made by Annapolis craftsman John Shaw, and an 18th-century portrait of Colonel Benjamin Tasker by artist John Wollaston.

- The Belair Stable Museum
Just a block away from the Belair Mansion, the Belair Stable Museum is a must-see for history and animal lovers alike. The stable was built in 1907 by William Woodward and was the home of several champions since its construction, including two Triple Crown winners. Both the Belair Mansion and the Belair Stable Museum are free-of-charge to visit and explore.
- The National Capital Radio and Television Museum
If you’re looking for something to do on a weekend, check out The National Capital Radio and Television Museum. Here you’ll find a wonderful collection of broadcast memorabilia. You’ll not only learn history but see it for yourself. If you want to teach your kids about life before smartphones and high-definition televisions, this is a great way to do it.
