What's Open, Closed In Washington DC On New Year's Day 2020

WASHINGTON, DC — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

DC Government Offices: All District of Columbia offices will be closed New Year's Day.
DC Courts: All courts are closed New Year's Day.

DC Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1 for winter break. Classes resume Jan. 2.
Post Offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.
DC Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed Jan. 1.
Parking: Parking meters will not be in effect New Year's Day. Residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions also will not be enforced.
DC Circulator: On Dec. 31, the Circulator will run special extended hours until 2 a.m. New Year's Day on select routes. On Jan. 1, services will operate on a normal schedule.
DC Streetcar: On Dec. 31, DC Streetcar will run special extended hours until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, service will run on a shortened schedule from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.
National Mall and Memorial Parks: Open New Year's Day. Rangers are on duty at sites to answer questions from 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Ford's Theatre and the Washington Monument are also open Jan. 1.
National Archives Building: Research rooms close at 12 p.m. Dec. 31. The entire facility is closed New Year's Day.
DC Public Library: All branches will be open 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Dec. 31 and will be closed New Year's Day.
Recreation/Community Centers: Closed Jan. 1.
Indoor Swimming Facilities: Closed Jan. 1.
Trash Collection: Sanitation services will be suspended Jan. 1, and trash and recycling collections will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week into Saturday.
Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open New Year's Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.
Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —
- Safeway: Some Safeway locations will be closing early New Year's Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
- Giant Food: All stores are open New Year's Day, though specific hours may vary by location.
- Harris Teeter: Open regular hours.
- ALDI: Closed Jan. 1.
- Target: Stores are open until 9 p.m. New Year's Day.
- Walmart: Open regular hours.
- Trader Joe's: Closed Jan. 1.
- Whole Foods: Many locations will be open with modified hours. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
