What's Open, What's Closed In Bowie On New Year's Day 2020

BOWIE, MD — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

We have your roundup of what's open and what's closed in Bowie this New Year's Day.

City of Bowie Offices: All city offices will be closed Jan. 1.

Prince George's County Government Offices: All county offices will be closed Jan. 1, with the exception of public safety agencies.

State Courts: All state courts are closed Jan. 1.

Prince George's County Public Schools: Schools are closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1 for winter break. Classes resume Jan. 2.

Post Offices: Closed New Year's Day. No mail will be delivered.

TheBus: Several routes will not operate New Year's Day. Regular service resumes Jan. 2. See affected routes.

Call-A-Bus: Closed Jan. 1. Services will resume Jan. 2.

CountyClick 3-1-1: Closed Jan. 1. Services will resume Jan. 2. Residents still may submit service requests online at www.countyclick311.com.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.

Prince George's County Memorial Library System: All branches will be closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Community/Senior Centers: Closed New Year's Day. See a full schedule of closings.

PG County Historical Sites/Parks: Historical sites and regional parks are closed Jan. 1.

Animal Shelter: Closed Jan. 1.

Trash Collection: The City of Bowie will not collect trash New Year's Day, and no makeup days are scheduled; however, recycling will be picked up. In county-contracted areas, trash and recycling collection occurs Dec. 31. No trash or recycling will be collected Wednesday, and collection days for the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day. Contact private providers for any schedule changes.

Landfills/Recycling Centers: Brown Station Road facilities will be closed Jan. 1. Prince George's County Materials Recycling Facility and Organics Composting Facility, in addition to the Missouri Avenue Solid Waste Acceptance and Recycling Center, also will be closed New Year's Day.

Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open New Year's Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.

Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —

• Safeway: Some Safeway locations will be closing early New Year's Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
• Harris Teeter: Open regular hours.
• Giant Food: All stores are open New Year's Day, though specific hours may vary by location.
• Lidl: Most stores are open on New Year's Eve and closed on Christmas Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
• ALDI: Closed New Year's Day.
• Shoppers: Open regular hours.
• Walmart: Open regular hours.
• Target: Stores are open until 9 p.m. New Year's Day.
