SEAT PLEASANT, MD — A woman has died after a driver fleeing police in a stolen car struck her vehicle in Seat Pleasant over the weekend, police say.

Police responded to a report of an attempted armed carjacking by a suspect wearing a bandana in the area of East Forest Road at around 9:13 p.m. on Oct. 5, according to a report from the Prince Geroge's County Police Department.

"An alert Prince George’s County Police patrol officer observed a car being driven by a man wearing a bandana," the report states. "The officer got behind the vehicle, radioed dispatch and was advised the car had been reported stolen."

The officer tried to stop the car at around 9:50 p.m. on Columbia Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, and the driver initially complied before suddenly speeding off when the officer got out of the car to approach the driver, the report continues.

About 20 seconds later, the driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light and hit a car driven by 43-year-old Maria Carrion of Hyattsville at the intersection of MLK Jr. Highway and Southland Drive, the report adds. Carrion died of her injuries at the hospital.

"It’s been determined the officer who had attempted the earlier traffic stop did not pursue the fleeing vehicle," the report states. "Once she was back in her cruiser, she too made a right onto MLK Junior Highway in an attempt to locate the vehicle, saw smoke up ahead and came upon the crash site."

The driver and passenger fled the stolen car after the crash, the report states, noting that the female passenger was taken into custody nearby but the driver remains on the loose.
