Blizzard Warning Issued; 12-18 Inches of Snow Expect to Hit Hingham

Over a foot of snow could be on its way to Hingham.

HINGHAM, MA — Over a foot of snow and high winds are expected to hit Hingham Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning that will be in effect from 9 a.m. Thursday to 8 p.m. The NWS is warning of "heavy snow," 12-18 inches across most of Massachusetts, including Hingham. Winds of 15-20 mph and gusts up to 45 mph are also expected.

Snow will begin early Thursday morning and last through much of the day before ending Thursday evening, the NWS said. Snow could fall heavy at times and impact both the morning and evening commutes.

Heavy snow and strong winds will result in blizzard conditions, according to the NWS. Snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour will be possible at times.

Travel is not recommended during the warning. Forecasters are expecting strong winds that create blowing and drifting snow and near-white out conditions at times.

A Blizzard Warning is issued when sustained winds or frequent gusts over 35 mph are expected with considerable falling and/or blowing snow.

In addition to the Blizzard Warning, a Coastal Flood Advisory will be in effect starting at 8 a.m. Thursday. During the advisory, some vulnerable shore roads will likely become flooded with up to a foot of water inundation possible. The advisory is in effect until 1 p.m., according to the NWS.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is issued when minor coastal flooding of the most vulnerable shore roads and/or basements due to the height of storm tied or wave splash over.
