Hingham Police Charge Man After Overnight Standoff

Nearby streets were evacuated after police said the victim accused the suspect of assault with a lacrosse stick and possessing firearms.

HINGHAM, MA — A four-hour standoff with an armed suspect at a home near the Hingham Public Library that caused police to close area streets and evacuate neighboring residents concluded with the arrest of a man on an assault charges early Friday morning.

Police said they were called to the home about 10 p.m. Thursday night for a domestic dispute. The victim, who fled the home when police arrived, said the suspect attacked them with a lacrosse stick and had a gun on a lanyard around their neck.

Officers were told there were other firearms in the house.

Police said they tried to get the suspect to come out of the house using the cruiser loudspeakers and a phone call, but the suspect refused. Members of the Metro-LEC SWAT and Metro-LEC Crisis Negotiation Team were called in, while several homes were evacuated, and Leavitt Street, Winter Street and Irving Street were closed.

Police said after several hours of negotiations the suspect left the home and surrendered about 2:15 a.m. The suspect was charged with assault and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police said the names and genders were not released because the standoff resulted from a domestic violence call.
