Hingham Police Urge Cyclists To Obey Rules Of Road

Hingham police released a dashcam video of a near collision with a cyclist who ran a red light.

HINGHAM, MA — Hingham police are using dash cam video of a near collision between a cruiser and a cyclist who ran a red light to urge cyclists to obey the rules of the road for their own safety.

Hingham police said the cruiser was leaving the Hingham Shipyard at night on a green arrow when the video shows the cyclist darting out in front of the cruiser, despite the rider having a red light on Route 3A toward Weymouth at that time.

Police remind cyclists that they must stop at red lights like any vehicle, and they must have a light on the front of their bicycles if they are riding at night.

Police also noted this cyclist was not wearing a helmet. While a helmet was not required by law due to the rider's age, one could have prevented serious injury had their been a collision.

Police said the officer stopped the cyclist and educated him on safety rules with the hope that the release of the video will do the same for other riders in town.
