Hingham's Brian Boyle Scores 1st NHL Goal Since Cancer Diagnosis

The Hingham native scored a well-deserved goal Thursday night against the Oilers.

NEWARK, NJ — For everything that Hingham native Brian Boyle has been through this year, he earned a well-deserved smile Thursday night.

Boyle, who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia earlier this year, scored his first goal as a member of the New Jersey Devils and since he announced he had cancer.

Early in the first period against the Edmonton Oilers, Boyle scored after recovering his own rebound and flicking the puck from the right post.

"I've never cried after a goal before. It's a lot, it's everything," Boyle said after the goal.

Boyle revealed that he had cancer in September and told reporters that increased fatigue was the only indication something was wrong. He initially attributed that to a trade from Tampa Bay to Toronto and being the father of an infant and 2-year-old.

He missed the first 10 games of the year due to his diagnosis.
