Man Arrested Following Pursuit Into Hull: Hingham Police

Hingham Police say a Roslindale man was arrested after driving his car onto a Hull beach.

HINGHAM, MA—A Roslindale man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after leading Hingham and Hull police officers on a pursuit into Hull that ended in his car getting stuck on a beach, according to police.

Joshua Johnson,34, is facing 11 different charges, operating under the influence of alcohol, operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, possession of a Class B substance, failure to stop for police, unlicensed operation, open container of alcohol in vehicle, speeding, a marked lanes violation and a stop sign violation. He also had an outstanding warrant for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

"On Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at 2:33 a.m. an Officer noticed a car that had driven off the road and was stuck in brush and trees on Charles Street," said a press release from the Hingham Police Department. "He approached it to see if anyone was inside and to investigate the crash. The driver was alone. He was not wearing pants and holding a lighter."

Police said the responding officer asked Johnson to lower his window, but Johnson instead freed the car and drove away, nearly hitting the officer. Several officers chased him from Main Street in Hingham toward Hull and Cohasset.

During the pursuit, one of Johnson's tires came off his car after he hit a median at the intersection of Rockland St. and Hull St. and nearly hit a Hingham cruiser, according to police. However, he continued to drive into Hull until he reached the dead end at Pemberton Point.

"The car then drove off the road onto the rocky beach and sharply turned to avoid the ocean. It drove for a short distance on the rocks until it became stuck," said the press release. "Officers could see the driver was holding what appeared to be a crack (cocaine) pipe in one hand and an open beer in his other hand. He was arrested without further incident with the assistance of the Hull Police. Officers found a black BB gun hidden in a pair of pants on the front passenger seat and several empty whiskey bottles in the center console."

Johnson was booked at the Hingham police and held without bail overnight, said police. He was arraigned in Brockton District Court on Tuesday and his bail was set at $2,500 for the Hingham charges, but his bail was revoked due to several other open cases.
