MBTA Proposes Cutting Hingham Center Bus Loop

The MBTA argues the changes would make rides shorter and run more frequently to and from Quincy Center.

HINGHAM, MA — The Hingham Center bus loop may be removed from the Route 220 service, the MBTA announced.

The proposal is part of the “Better Bus Project,”an initiative aiming to improve the timeliness and frequency of bus service.

If approved, expect two key changes:

  • Route 220 service from the Hingham Shipyard is shifted to Lincoln Street. Riders coming from the shipyard will have to walk about six minutes to Lincoln Street.
  • The Hingham Center loop will be eliminated, making Hingham Depot the closest bus stop. The walk to Hingham Depot is about 12 minutes.

The MBTA argues the changes would make rides two minutes faster for people coming from Hingham Shipyard and make trips two minutes shorter for riders not using the loop. Every weekdays, 37 passenger hours would be saved, the MBTA said.

If approved, the changes would go into effect starting Sept. 1. The MBTA is accepting rider feedback until March 13.
