South Shore Conservatory’s Evenings Under the Stars Presents H.M.S. Pinafore This Weekend
SSC's Evenings Under the Stars concert series presents Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta H.M.S. Pinafore on Saturday, 8/2, 7 pm.
South Shore Conservatory’s (SSC) Evenings Under the Stars (EUS) concert series presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore on Saturday, August 2, at 7 pm. This night of comic operetta is the last of four EUS Saturday evening open air summer concerts in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive, Hingham. This concert is generously sponsored by The Palmer Family. The H.M.S. Pinafore chorus is sponsored by Deborah Allinson.
H.M.S. Pinafore; or, The Lass That Loved a Sailor, is a comic operetta in two acts taking place on a British ship, the H.M.S. Pinafore. Josephine, the daughter of the ship’s captain, is in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, despite the fact that her father has already arranged for her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Sir Joseph’s advocacy for the equality of all mankind paves the way for Josephine and Ralph and they publicly declare their undying love for each other and make plans to elope. The captain discovers their plan and hilarity ensues. No topic is safe, as Gilbert pokes good-natured fun at social class issues, patriotism, authority figures, and party politics.
SSC’s Evening Under the Stars production of H.M.S. Pinafore brings together a first rate chorus, talented pianist Elizabeth Cordes, and singers already well-loved by EUS audiences as well as new, rising stars from the Boston opera scene. The performers include George Cordes, Paul Soper, Tom Oesterling, Matthew Stansfield, Jeffrey Marani, Brian Gilman, Natalie Polito, Sara Oettinger, and Beth MacLeod Largent. They will leave you laughing as they weave the magic that only Gilbert and Sullivan can create!
