Highland Kitchen Makes 'Difficult' Decision To Close For Winter

The award-winning Somerville restaurant slammed the state for "not helping restaurants" and said it's been unable to get rent relief.

SOMERVILLE, MA — An award-winning Somerville restaurant has made the "difficult" decision to hibernate this winter. Highland Kitchen owners Marci Joy and Mark Romano slammed the state for "not helping restaurants" in a statement on the restaurant's Instagram page Friday, saying the decision to temporarily close came after they "tried to hold on as long as possible."

"We have been unable to get any rent relief, and we all know @mass.gov is not helping restaurants," the statement read in part. "Hibernation is the only way Highland Kitchen can get through this winter with the hope of reopening in the spring."

Highland Kitchen will close after business hours on Sunday, Dec. 13. It joins a growing number of area restaurants that have gone into hibernation until the weather is nicer or a treatment for the coronavirus is widely available.
