Somerville Bar Featured In 'The Social Network' Has Closed
All signs – including one out front – point to the Thirsty Scholar's closure being temporary, but the future of the pub is unclear.
SOMERVILLE, MA — An Irish pub that's popular with locals and nearby college students has shut down, but the closure may be temporary.
The Thirsty Scholar is listed as "temporarily closed" on Google, and there have been no updates to its social media pages since December. Boston Restaurant Talk reported the bar is locked up and has a sign out front reading "sorry, temporarily closed until further notice."
The Thirsty Scholar served as the backdrop of the opening scene in the 2010 movie "The Social Network," about Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook. The Beacon Street haunt opened in the mid-1990s and draws an eclectic crowd that includes Harvard students, Irish immigrants and residents of Somerville and Cambridge, Boston Restaurant Talk reported.
