Next Somerville High School Principal Selected
Matthew Buchanan, principal of Hope High School in Providence, RI, will succeed Sibby LaGambina, who is retiring after 35 years in the SPS.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The Somerville Public Schools has named its next high school principal. Matthew Buchanan, principal of Hope High School in Providence, RI, will succeed Sebastian "Sibby" LaGambina, who is retiring at the end of the school year after a 35-year career with the district, including four years as Somerville High School principal.
Buchanan was chosen from a pool of four finalists. He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching, counseling and program development in a variety of settings in the Providence area, according to a press release from the Somerville Public Schools.
Buchanan taught middle school health/physical education and has been a middle school assistant principal, high school assistant principal and high school principal at an alternative evening program. He became principal of Hope High School in 2019.

Buchanan holds a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Rhode Island College and a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies, with a minor in African American Studies, from the University of Rhode Island.
