Somerville Medical Pot Shop Looks To Open For Recreational Use

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city's second medical marijuana dispensary is looking to convert part of its facility into a space for recreational use. Revolutionary Clinics, which has operated on Broadway for more than three years, submitted a proposal to the Urban Design Commission to turn its garage into such a space.

The dispensary would continue to offer medical marijuana services in the front of the store, while the back would serve as a recreational shop, The Somerville Times reported.

The Commission backed the plan in spirit but requested some changes, namely a divider out back to separate it from neighboring homes in the area. The plan will be discussed at the Commission's next meeting.

Revolutionary Clinics started as a nonprofit that provided heart screenings to young patients but switched to medical marijuana after the founder's daughter died of an opioid overdose. The company was encouraged by studies showing reduced opioid deaths in areas with friendlier marijuana logs.

Its Broadway location was the company's first dispensary. It now has two other facilities in Cambridge.
