Somerville Music Club Thunder Road Shutting Down
The club planned to stay open even as plans were drawn up for a mixed-use development, but it was unable to weather the pandemic.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A music club whose future was already in question has shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic. Thunder Road, which has been closed since March, permanently shut its doors over the weekend, according to a statement on the club's Facebook page.
"The challenges upon us all at this time are far too great to keep our doors open and remain as a staple music venue in the Boston area," the statement read in part.
Thunder Road first opened in 2015, succeeding music clubs Radio and Club Choices at the spot. A new development was proposed at the site last fall, leaving the future of the club up in the air. Plans called for a five-story mixed-use building with 12 apartments and a bar or restaurant on the first floor.

Thunder Road planned to stay open before the shutdown. It would fall under Phase 4 reopening, which is not expected to start until a treatment or vaccine for the coronavirus is available.
