Somerville Police Seek Fedora-Wearing Granny In 2 Bank Robberies

Believed to be a woman dressed as a man, the robber knocked off a second bank Tuesday.

Somerville police released photos Wednesday of a suspect in two bank robberies, including the Community Credit Union, which was knocked off Tuesday.

A grainy photo from Tuesday’s robbery shows the suspect with a fedora-style hat, a two-piece suit and a necktie, appearing somewhat like a man.

Not so, Det. John Oliveira at the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force told Patch Wednesday. More likely, he said, that ”man” is a woman, likely near 70 years old.

“We don’t really know,” he said. ”That’s what we think. We’re getting conflicting information from witnesses.”

Police say the robber handed a note to a teller demanding money, then walked off with the loot. The suspect is believed to have robbed Citizens Bank, across the street, on May 13.

For now, the detective said, the best description of the robber is this: white female, about 4-foot-6 to 5-foot-1, perhaps as young as 40 but more likely closer to 70, and no more than 110 pounds. She may appear to walk with a limp.
