ICYMI: Somerville Students Smash World Record
The Globe reports that an obscure record for simultaneous standing up was squashed by dedicated youngsters.
There’s a world record for virtually everything - there was the world’s largest pizza at 26,883 pounds, and there’s a the world’s largest ball of twine at 13 feet, although there’s some controversy over which ball of twine holds the true claim to the “world’s largest” title.
More pertinently, it follows that there exists a Guinness World Record for people simultaneously standing with their arms linked. Technically, it’s 39. But as of Tuesday, thanks to Somerville High School students, that number will go up by 10 as soon as their efforts are verified by Guinness, according to the Boston Globe.
The Globe’s video shows 59 Somerville teenagers in their school cafeteria standing at the same time, arms linked, without anyone falling over. The source notes that even though this sounds like a simple task, it becomes more difficult the more individuals are involved. In this instance, it took 10 tries.

However, Somerville students are confident their video submission will put them in the Guinness book.
“We wanted something that would be fun and challenging at the same time for the school, and it was a way to get everyone involved,” sophomore class president Flavia Martins told the source.
