Somerville Trick-or-Treating Hours, Safety Tips

Halloween is on in Somerville despite a scary forecast.

SOMERVILLE, MA — If you're planning to brave the soggy weather expected this Halloween, city officials have a few tips to make sure you stay safe. Trick-or-treating is suggested between 5 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31.

The sun will set at 5:39 p.m. on Oct. 31, which means that the bulk of trick-or-treating will happen at night. The rain may also leave the roads and sidewalks slick. Those who plan on trick-or-treating should keep in mind the following safety tips:

  • Bring a flashlight to help you see where you’re walking and to make you more visible to drivers.
  • Watch out for wet leaves, fallen tree branches, and other debris on sidewalks and crosswalks.
  • Make sure costumes are safe and easy to get around in:
    • Costumes that drag on the ground can be a tripping hazard.
    • Make sure wigs and masks don’t block the wearer’s vision.
    • Add reflective tape to costumes or trick or treat bags.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street and cross in marked crosswalks. Keep in mind that if it’s raining, drivers may not be able to see pedestrians as well or stop quickly on a wet road.
  • City crossing guards will be out between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Please be sure to follow their instructions when crossing.
