True Somerville, US Hero Honored
Commander Tom Kelley lost his eye while piloting his fleet to safety during the Vietnam War.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The Celtics got the win against the San Antonio Spurs Monday night, but there was only one true hero at TD Garden.
Commander Tom Kelley, of Somerville, was honored during halftime's 'Heroes Among Us' presentation. He got a well-deserved standing ovation - Kelley suffered a head injury that cost him his eye when his convoy came under attack during the Vietnam War. One of the boats suffered a mechanical failure, but Kelley, serving in the Navy, managed to lead his fleet to safety.
Kelley received the Medal of Honor, and kept on serving more than two decades as a Navy officer.
