Winter Hill Students Love Kale?

Employees with the Somerville Farm to School Project were pleasantly surprised by the students' reaction to kale chips.

SOMERVILLE, MA - March is National Nutrition Month, and to celebrate the Somerville Farm to School project is trying to get local kids to fall in love with kale.

Kids can be picky eaters, but they seemed to like the kale chips made by the team, according to the a blog post by the project.

David Heidkamp, Framingham Nutrition Intern, and Meghan Bodo, Food Literacy Educator made toasted kale chips for the little ones and let students at the Winter Hill Community School try some after lunch.

"Some students were nervous to try a new vegetable but were very happy once they did. One fifth grader said, 'I wish I could have kale chips everyday!'" Somerville School to Table wrote in the blog post.

According to the team, 79 percent of the students were willing to try the kale chips and 85 percent of those who tried them said they would eat them again.

Over the next month the team will host taste tests at the following schools:

Arthur D. Healey School, March 3

John F. Kennedy Elementary School, March 10

West Somerville Neighborhood School, March 17

East Somerville Community School, March 24

Dr. Albert F. Argenziano School, April 7
