Building Commissioner: Flood Zone Study REQUIRED for Monster 40B

Wayland's Building Commissioner, Geoffrey Larsen, sent a letter to the ZBA clarifying that a flood zone study is required.

The developer behind the Monster 40B apartment complex flip-flopped in June and suddenly claimed that a flood zone study is "not required" for his project -- even though the site is covered by a FEMA "Special Flood Hazard Area". Mr. Zieff refused to deliver a flood zone study to the Wayland Zoning Board of Appeals, after promising for months to do so.

Over the weekend, Geoffrey Larsen, the Wayland Building Commissioner, clarified things: a flood zone study is required by federal and state laws and regulations. Mr. Zieff cannot refuse, if he wants his project to go forward. To see a copy of Commissioner Larsen's letter go to: https://www.protectwayland.org...

This is major issue because Pine Brook runs through the site -- and YMCA Camp Chickami is a short distance downstream, threatened by increased flood damage. A flood could also erode and expose the large septic leach fields Mr. Zieff wants to build next to Pine Brook, which would send raw sewage into the Brook, a clear threat to public health and safety. Hundreds of children play in and near Pine Brook every summer.
