WAYLAND, MA — Fire officials in Wayland are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged the facade of Wayland Wine and Spirits just before midnight on Tuesday.

Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson told Patch by email the fire was first reported at 11:31 p.m. in the 300 block of Commonwealth Road. Several 911 callers and the building's internal alarm system alerted firefighters to the blaze.

The fire, McPherson said, started in a planter in front of the building. It's unclear what caused the planter to go up in flames.

Because fire crews were able to respond quickly to the fire, the interior of the liquor store was affected only by minor smoke damage, the chief said.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing, he said.
