MA Wind Storm: 42,000 Still Without Power Tuesday Morning

A powerful storm ripped across Massachusetts on Monday, downing trees and power lines. Cleanup was ongoing Tuesday morning.

WAYLAND, MA — Close to 42,000 Massachusetts residents were still without power Tuesday morning following a powerful storm that lasted much of the day on Monday.

Plymouth and Bristol counties were hit hardest. More than half of customers in towns like Cohasset, Rehoboth and Hanson were still in the dark Tuesday morning, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Close to 2,000 were without power in MetroWest towns like Wayland, Sherborn and Weston.

The outages are down from the peak of around 132,000 at 7 p.m. Monday. The outages were dropping fast Tuesday — about 5,000 were restored between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. alone. You can check for local power outages on the MEMA website.

The storm began early Monday morning with rain, but winds were picking up around 11 a.m. The storm didn't leave the state until after 8 p.m. Monday.

Wind gusts between Boston and Worcester topped 50 mph Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Milton and Duxbury recorded the strongest gusts at 70 mph and 72 mph, respectively. The storm also dumped plenty of rain, with more than an inch recorded in Worcester. A strong band of rain also soaked communities along the border of Norfolk and Bristol counties.

The forecast for the rest of the week looks mostly dry and sunny, according to the weather service. There's a chance of showers Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, and it will be dry and seasonable each day after — until Friday night, when there's a 30 percent of snow showers.
