Moment of Silence in Wayland Followed by Bells Tolling

The bells at First Parish in Wayland tolled on Monday 86 times to honor the four victims of the Boston Marathon bombing and aftermath.

A minute of silence for the four victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and aftermath was followed by the sound of church bells tolling in Wayland center Monday afternoon.

The bells at First Parish in Wayland tolled 86 times — once for every year of the four victims' lives. The bells honored Medford native Krystle Campbell, 29; Lu Lingzi, 23, of China; Martin Richard, 8, of Dorchester; and MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 27.

In the belfry of First Parish church, Susie Keyes stood in silence, then reached high up on the rope, pulling it down toward the ground, to sound the bells a total of 86 times. Keyes is a member of a group of parishioners who ring the bells at memorial services when a member of the parish dies.
