This Mother's Day, Her Kids Run Toward a Cure for ALS

This first-ever 5K called Dana Miller's Walking Warriors Fun Run to Cure ALS was started by Miller's kids. Are you signed up or donating?

This past February, Dana Miller of Wayland lost a seven-year battle with ALS. Her sister-in-law Rose Ann Miller said, “she fought valiantly and her fight inspired her four children.”

It inspired Dana’s kids to create the first-ever Dana Miller’s Walking Warriors Fun Run to Cure ALS, which takes place on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10. This 5K fun run or walk starts from the Claypit School at 10 a.m. (registration is at 9 a.m.).

When Dana was first diagnosed, her youngest, Marley, was 5, the oldest twins were 12 and the middle child, Kyle, was 8.

“It was difficult to watch their once ‘can do’ mom deteriorating before their eyes, said Rose Ann. “However, instead of sitting back and feeling sad, the family galvanized their local Wayland community by creating successful ALS fundraising walks. In the process, the children raised upwards of $80,000 for ALS research and raised awareness throughout their entire community about the disease. In addition, they learned life lessons that you really can try to do something to better the world, even when your own particular situation is full of hardships.”

Shortly before Dana passed away, CVS had asked her to be the official spokesperson for its ALS campaign. Dana died on Feb. 4 , and nearly 800 people attended her funeral.

“I know that I am biased, but the Millers are a lovely family and the strength of these four children is an inspiration to us all,” said Rose Ann.
