TEDx Launches in Wayland

TEDxYouth is now active in Wayland. The debut talk includes everything from extraterrestrials to transgenders to beatboxing to volunteering.

You may be familiar with TED already.

TED is a national nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks, says the TED website. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world. Created in the spirit of TED’s mission, TEDx supports independent organizers who want to create TED-like events.

The first TEDxYouth event for Wayland happens on Saturday, May 9, from 2-6 p.m. at Wayland High School’s auditorium. Called TEXxYouth@Wayland-Daring Greatly, it features 12 high school and middle school speakers, and three musical performers.

“The intention of the event is to build community, spread inspiring ideas, and develop understanding and joy,” said Ashley Welch, group member. ”Each talk will be 6-18 minutes and topics range from extraterrestrial life to micro-agression, from beat boxing to transgender identity in our culture, from introverts in an extrovert’s world to the power of volunteerism.”

The organization welcomes, and needs, donations small or large to support the event in order to cover its costs. The gaol is to raise $5,000 before May 9, said Welch.
