Wayland Discourages Trick-or-Treating Due To Coronavirus

Wayland health officials are offering pandemic Halloween advice ahead of the holiday on Saturday.

WAYLAND, MA — With Halloween fast approaching, Wayland health officials are offering advice for parents — and treat-givers — amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Like some surrounding towns, Wayland is discouraging trick-or-treating this year as Massachusetts sees a worrying rise in new cases. The state added over 1,100 new cases on Wednesday, a number not seen since the first surge last spring.

Big cities in Massachusetts, including Worcester and Springfield, have banned trick-or-treating this year. Towns like Sudbury and Natick are gently discouraging the activity, but have not issued explicit bans.

If you plan to celebrate Halloween this year, here's what Wayland health officials advise:

  • Door to door trick or treating is discouraged
  • If candy is being given out it should be left in a neutral location outside (people should not be going into the house or interacting)
  • If you decide to trick or treat, do it with family members of your household in your own neighborhood
  • Wear your face covering or mask

The Centers for Disease Control is also offering advice on how to celebrate Halloween this year, including alternate ideas.
