Wayland Fall Hazardous Waste Event Is Saturday
Here's how to get rid of those old pesticides and paints collecting dust in your garage.
WAYLAND, MA — Wayland's twice-yearly hazardous waste collection event is this Saturday. Town residents can bring items like old paint, gasoline, and herbicides for disposal — but there is a 10-gallon limit per person.
While many household items will be collected, there's a long list of things you can't bring: ammunition of explosives, biological waste, asbestos, pharmaceuticals, and radioactive materials are among them.
You must register online before the event. The collection happens at the Wayland DPW Garage, 66 River Road, beginning at 9 a.m.

Here's more from a town press release:
Wayland holds HHWD twice a year, generally in the spring and fall, registration is online and begins about 1 month before the event. We are also participating in HHWD events regionally where Wayland residents may attend an event in another town and pay a fee to dispose of their hazardous waste products.

For Wayland HHWD events, please understand that due to the limited availability of funding we must limit the amount of accepted waste per household to 10 gallons max (liquid), or 10 pounds max (solid) at the collection. Also, NO waste from any business will be taken at this collection. You must come by car and remain in your car during the process (staff will direct you to the appropriate area for disposal). Please plan to arrive at the site at the beginning of your scheduled half hour — please do not come early. We will do our best to get everyone through the line during the half hour that they are scheduled but please be patient should there be a delay.
Please keep household hazardous materials in their originally labeled containers, packed securely in boxes or other containers when transporting to the collection. Do not mix into any single container any substances which may result in a hazardous reaction or an explosive of shock sensitive material. Please do not leave your vehicle when you arrive at the collection site as your materials will be unloaded for you (unlock your trunk, if possible, prior to arriving at the site). Smoking is prohibited at the site. No hazardous waste will be accepted after 11:30 a.m.
If Wayland residents have a large amount of hazardous waste that they have questions about, the Health Department in collaboration with the Fire Department can assist residents in determining which products are accepted at HHWD. For residents who need help with this process, the Fire Department is willing to conduct a site visit to help residents with questions such as; what can be taken to HHWD, is it safe to bring to HHWD, can it be stored safely and other questions. Residents should reach out to a neighbor or friend for transporting the products safely to the HHWD event.
