Women's Tennis Team From Wayland Heads To Nationals

The team heads to United States Tennis Association's League 55 & Over National Championships.

WAYLAND, MA—For many tennis players, advancing to the nationals is a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment.

That came true for a women’s tennis team from the Longfellow Fitness Club in Wayland, which won the New England championships this past weekend. The team now heads to the United States Tennis Association's League 55 & Over National Championships, which will take place in Orlando in October.

The team is one of six USTA New England League teams to head to nationals. Some 66 teams across six levels competed for a chance to represent New England.

Sylvia Swartz led the 7.0 team out of Longfellow Fitness Club, reports the USTA. The Wayland team went 3-0 to win, with a 6-3 individual score, which is one win better than both the second and third-place winners.

According to the USTA, in a 20-team field Swartz’s team battled through a quarterfinal match against Mid-Cape Athletic Club and semis against Fore Court Racquet and Fitness. Longfellow won both matches by a 2-1 margin. They were then matched up against a gritty Mid-Cape team once again in the finals, which had advanced via wildcard. Longfellow took the championship by an identical 2-1 score.
