Man Arrested For Modifying Car Like Police Vehicle

The man was pulled over for tinted windows, but police quickly noticed the flashing lights, a hood sign and the signature MSP blue paint.

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, MI — Police arrested a 48-year-old man in Grosse Pointe Shores after he caught authorities’ eyes while driving a mock cop cruiser, according to media reports. The man was pulled over on Lake Shore Road near South Deeplands Road in a car that looked suspiciously like a Michigan State Police trooper's vehicle, officials said.

Police said the man was pulled over initially for tinted windows. During the traffic stop, however, police discovered flashing lights, a hood sign and the signature MSP blue paint. The vehicle was reportedly bought at an auction, which is legal, but then modified with features like emergency overhead flashing lights, which is not legal.

A Grosse Pointe Shores police lieutenant said he first spotted the car a few weeks ago, WDIV reported.

"I thought it was odd," Lt. Scott Rohr said. "I pulled over thinking it was a trooper. It was not ... Civilians should not have emergency lights in their vehicle and certainly not look specifically like a police car."

Investigators don't believe the driver was trying to impersonate a police officer when he was pulled over since they didn't find a badge or a vest in the car. The car was uninsured and impounded. The lights will have to be removed, authorities said.
