Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Gets 'Made In America' Show Grant

ANN ARBOR, MI — The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra announced Monday that it has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Harry A. & Margaret D. Towsley Foundation to present Made in America.

The concert is scheduled for Oct. 12 in Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater celebrating classical music inspired by the people and landscape of the United States.

The concert will feature award-winning cellist Zlatomir Fung, the first American cellist to win the 1st prize gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition since Nathanial Rosen won the honor in 1978. Fung won the competition in St. Petersburg, Russia in June of this year. He makes his American orchestral debut as winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra on this program preforming Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.

Also on the program is Joan Tower’s Grammy Award-winning Made in America, an orchestral work part of Ford Made in America, a partnership program of the American Symphony Orchestra League and Meet the Composer, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. Igor Stravinsky’s tribute to Tchaikovsky, the Divertimento from “The Fairy’s Kiss”, will also be performed.

“In this concert we’ll celebrate composers who drew inspiration from time spent in this country,” said A²SO Executive Director Mary Steffek Blaske. “Joan Tower’s poignant tribute to our nation pairs beautifully with works by composers who each made the United States their home for a time, and our soloist, a young American cellist of Bulgarian and Chinese heritage, brings our celebration of America full circle.”
