The population of District 196 has topped 153,000 people. The total district population of 153,051 as of June 1, 2012 represents an increase of 1,429 people or approximately 0.9 percent over district population figures from one year ago.
The School Board approved the district’s 2012 certified census at its June 25 meeting. The census figures are submitted to the state demographer in June each year and are used to determine tax levies for funding community education programs in the district.
District 196 is the fourth largest school district in Minnesota, with total enrollment of approximately 27,500 students. The district covers approximately 110 square miles and includes all or parts of the cities of Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan, Burnsville, Coates, Inver Grove Heights and Lakeville, and Empire and Vermillion townships.

District 196 has one of the highest “capture rates” of any school district in the state, at 87 percent, meaning that nearly nine of every 10 students who lives in District 196 attend District 196 schools.
