Charges Filed Following Alcohol-Fueled Rosemount Crash that Injured Two

George Deano Tompkins was more than three times over the legal limit when he caused a crash that injured two others, according to police.

Police say a Cottage Grove man was more than three times over the legal limit when he caused a 2012  car crash in Rosemount that injured two people. Now, the 58-year-old man faces a slew of criminal charges for his alleged role in the accident.

George Deano Tompkins is charged with two felony, first-degree counts of driving while impaired, four gross misdemeanor counts of criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm and a gross misdemeanor count of violation of a restricted driver's license.

A single felony, first-degree DWI carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and $14,000 in fines.

Just after 8 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2012, police were called to a car crash on Hwy. 55 near County Road 42 in Rosemount. At the scene, a victim told police that he and his passenger were driving westbound on Hwy. 55 when they saw a Dodge pickup swerving from lane to lane while traveling eastbound, according to a criminal complaint released this week.

As the pair drew closer to the pickup, it swerved into their lane and struck their vehicle head-on, the victims told police. Both victims had multiple visible injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers also spoke with Tompkins, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and was incoherent. After failing a preliminary breath test, Tompkins was taken to the hospital. There, police administered a blood test. Results showed a blood-alcohol level of .27, according to the complaint.

Tompkins has five previous DUI convictions dating back to 1993, including a felony, first-degree DUI conviction in 2005.
