Dakota County To Oversee Fatal Minneapolis Police Shooting Case

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom will decide whether or not to charge the Minneapolis police officers in the shooting of Dolal Idd.

DAKOTA COUNTY, MN — Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced Monday that his office will handle the case involving the fatal Dec. 30 shooting of Dolal Idd, 23, at the hands of Minneapolis police. Backstrom said the five largest metropolitan counties in the state have an agreement to handle "cases of this nature" in order to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.

Backstrom said the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office requested that his office handle the case.

He will determine whether or not the officers of the Minneapolis Police Department involved were legally justified to use deadly force under Minnesota law, and if not, to handle any charges that could result from the incident.

On Saturday just after 6 p.m., police shot and killed Idd during a traffic stop at a gas station parking lot on the 3500 block of Cedar Avenue South. Idd was a felony suspect, according to investigators.

"Shots were exchanged between the suspect and the officers," according to the Minneapolis police department. "The suspect died at the scene."

No officers were injured in the shooting. Protests quickly broke in the area as authorities tried to block off the scene to investigate.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office recently executed a "knock and announce" search warrant at the last known address of Idd.

Sheriff David Hutchinson made the video of it available "to clarify what occurred during the execution of the search warrant."
