Eastview High Junior Creates Virtual Tutoring Program

APPLE VALLEY, MN— An Eastview High School junior created a free virtual tutoring service.

Geniusprep, created by Tanisha Kota, 17, is available for students in grades K-6 who need support, emphasizing on English and math, Independent School District 196 said.

“After reading numerous articles about how many students were falling behind due to the pandemic, I knew I had to do something to help,”Kota said. “During those uncertain times, I wanted to make sure that every child was able to receive the help they needed with school.”

Kota recruited tutors from Minnesota, New Jersey, Florida and Georgia, the district said. Last year the team had over 40 tutors and gave more than 115 tutoring sessions per week, the district said.

“Tutoring is much more than a student sitting one-on-one with a tutor,” Kota said. “It is an opportunity to dive deeper into information and ask questions that are specific to a student. It’s also an opportunity to build a relationship with a potential mentor and friend for the future.”

Long-term goals for Geniusprep include expanding subjects, adding a public speaking course, and creating a day camp for girls to explore STEM, the district said.
