Enjoy A Recreational Fire Safely By Following Safety Guidelines

As nights begin to cool off for the season, recreational fires will be more common throughout the city. To keep your property and neighborhood safe please remember to follow recreational fire and burning guidelines while burning at your property.

Recreational fires should be confined to an area no greater than 3 x 3 x 3 feet and should be completely surrounded by a non-combustible material such as but not limited to rock, masonry, or ferrous metal. Areas intended for recreational fire use may be located no closer than 25 feet to a combustible structure such as a house, garage, deck or fence.

Recreational fires may not take place when winds exceed 15 miles per hour. When enjoying a recreational fire an adult must be present and a fire extinguisher or a garden hose attached to a working water spigot must be readily available. Only clean, dry, untreated wood material and twigs in segments no longer than 3 feet may be burned. Complaints on smoke from a fire may be grounds for immediate extinguishment. All fires are subject to discontinuance at the direction of the Fire or Police Department.

The open burning of any material that is not considered a recreational fire in Apple Valley requires a permit through the City’s Fire Department.
