A Genetic Republican for Angie Craig
Remembering great progressive leaders informs my voting decision.
I grew up in a Republican household. My father, a business man, passed on devout beliefs in individual equal rights and opportunity and the need for a responsible, accountable government. Our country depends upon a quality education and post-secondary options for every person, as well as strong lifelong training programs, for individuals and society to succeed. My Dad was a 1st generation Scandinavian American and my mother a Canadian immigrant. Their gratitude for this country’s opportunities is now mine, and I stand resolute that all people, including immigrants, deserve equal opportunities for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
After college, I had the privilege to work for Republican Governor Al Quie. Governor Quie and other progressive Independent-Republicans like former US Senators Dave Durenberger and Rudy Boschwitz as well as our long-time Dakota Co state representative Dennis Ozment, were advocates for quality of life: environment; education; and economic prosperity that helps real people. Inspired by them, I got involved: service on the local school board; long-time chair of Dennis Ozment’s campaigns for the legislature; a fundraiser at our farm in Farmington for Rep. John Kline. These Republicans worked across the aisle with Democrats to make America and Minnesota work for all of us.
These hard-working Republicans showed up. Former Congressman John Kline was present in the community and cared to know the stories and history of the people who live here and who he represented in Congress. This is in sharp contrast to our current Member of Congress, Jason Lewis. He not only fails to show up in our community, but he also fails to represent the core values of my father and the Republicans that so honorably have served Minnesota — fairness, opportunity, and generosity of spirit.

The candidate that best represents these values is Angie Craig. Angie Craig shows up. She impressed me at a fall community event as she stayed a long time, listening, conversing, and laughing with people. She asked great questions and showed the same energy and stamina that all great leaders must have for jobs so demanding. She is generous in spirit and has a keen mind. She — a Democrat — is the person that best emulates the values of the traditional, inclusive Independent-Republican party that I grew up in. Angie understands that our country is built on the shoulders of veterans, teachers and business people who create jobs.
As election day nears, I hope you will join me in voting for the candidate that represents the values that made, and kept, our country great.
