No Longer Wild, Irish Win First Girls' Lacrosse Game

The Rosemount High School girls' lacrosse team embarked on their first solo season Tuesday night and came away with a 10-9 home victory.

After six years playing as the Wild Irish as a cooperative with Eagan, the girls' lacrosse team stepped on the field as a solo act on Tuesday night and downed East Ridge 10-9 in the chilled spring air.

After an opening ceremony that featured University of Minnesota women's lacrosse coach Janet Holdsworth conducting a symbolic face-off, the Irish took the field to gloved applause.

The Wild Irish advanced to the section finals last year, but a roster split will mean both teams will have to find their own identity this season.

Girls' lacrosse has been sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League since 2001. Apple Valley and Eastview high schools also operated as a cooperative until 2008 as participation in the sport increased. The Wild Irish had a combined roster of 50 players last season.

The boys' lacrosse season also got underway this week. The Irish defeated East Ridge 19-1 in their opener on Monday.
