Second Endangered Penguin Hatched at Minnesota Zoo

Animal enthusiasts can watch the penguins play on a livestreaming webcam.

The Minnesota Zoo's population of endangered African penguins just got a little larger.

On Friday, zoo officials announced the hatching of a second penguin chick, which joins an older African penguin chick that hatched on March 2. Both penguins are being raised behind the scenes, according to a zoo news release, and aren't yet part of any exhibit at the zoo.

But that doesn't mean animal enthusiasts can't catch of glimpse of the penguins. The zoo rolled out a penguin webcam that is available from roughly 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day so that webcam viewers can keep an eye on the penguin pair.

African penguins live and nest on the southwest coast of Africa, and feed primarily on anchovies, sardines, herring and other fish, according to zoo officials. They are endangered in the wild as the result of oil spills, hunting and habitat destruction.
