Spectro Alloys Must Upgrade Equipment, Pay $110k In Fines: EPA

The EPA announced it had reached a settlement with Spectro Alloys after the corporation was accused of exceeding emissions limits.

ROSEMOUNT, MN— Spectro Alloys Corporation has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the agency said.

Spectro Alloys must make $1 million in upgrades in its air pollution control equipment to protect the environment and public health in the surrounding area, the agency said. The corporation must also pay a $110,000 civil penalty for its alleged violation of the Clean Air Act, the agency said.

In June 2020, the EPA alleged that Spectro Alloys exceeded emissions limits, the agency said.

The Star Tribune reported that residents complained for yearsabout the smell of chlorine, a metallic taste, a blue-green haze and not being able to be outside due to the air.

The city of Rosemount also released a statement following the EPA's announcement.

"After a series of meetings with representatives from Spectro Alloys Corp, the EPA and MPCA, and residents, the City of Rosemount is confident that the governing agencies are taking steps to ensure that this serious situation has reached a resolution point," the city said. "We are pleased to see that Spectro Alloys is taking responsibility for their operation and acting to remedy the issue. We will continue to monitor the progress and work with the EPA, MPCA, and Spectro Alloys to stay informed and ensure that our residents are safe."
