Vandals Target Trees In Popular Apple Valley Park
Officials say the trees in a popular Apple Valley park that were targeted by vandals will likely die.
The Dakota County Sheriff's Office is investigating recent damage to several large mature black cherry trees in Apple Valley's Lebanon Hills Regional Park.
Girdling, also called ring-barking, is a technique used in forestry, horticulture, and, in this case, vandalism, to remove an entire strip of bark from the circumference of a tree.
Areas above the girdle will die over time. Officials say, unfortunately, that it's likely the targeted trees will die.
