Weekend Activities: Cinco de Mayo, Bulldozers, Plays, Nature and More

There's plenty to do around the area this weekend. From garage sale bargains and great entertainment, to car-crushing demos and a spectacular moon, see what you don't want to miss.

When/Where: Performances through the weekend with a Sunday matinee at Rosemount High School.

Why Go: Always great productions at Rosemount High School and Jekyll & Hyde has received critical acclaim for its story and lush, romantic pop score.

When/Where: All day on (when else) Saturday, May 5 at Las Tortillas Mexican Restaurant in Rosemount.

Why Go: A good margarita tastes great any day, but on Cinco de Mayo, margaritas taste amazing. Plus there’s a whole pig roast, grilled Mexican corn on the cob and music to help celebrate.

When/Where: Saturday night, May 5 just after 8:00 p.m. on planet Earth.

Why Go: You don't have to go anywhere. Just step outside and enjoy the lunar show. Don't forget your camera!

When/Where: Beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 at 1901 Glendale Rd. in Hastings.

Why Go: Community members will channel their inner child as they navigate a 10-acre sandbox with a full-sized excavator, bulldozer, and skid steer this Saturday.  At the Extreme Sandbox open house, community members will explore heavy-duty machinery, watch the machinery crush cars, and more.

Equipment demonstrations:  1-5 p.m.

Car crushes:  2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley.

Why Go: Young men and women from the only dance troupe in Bethlehem—the Diyar Dance Theatre—will grace Shepherd of the Valley with their presence as part of Westminster Presbyterian Church's Palestinian Art Festival. This is a rare opportunity to learn firsthand what life is like for Christian Palestinians, and to see it expressed through the art of dance. There is no cost to attend and a freewill offering, and sales of refreshments and Palestinian crafts will help fund a "Minnesota Music Room" at Dar-al-Kalima College in Bethlehem.

Cost: Free will offering suggested.

Tim Pulnik at the Joke Joint Comedy Club

When/Where: 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5 at the Joke Joint Comedy Club in Lilydale.

Why Go: Tim Pulnik has been entertaining audiences in comedy clubs, theaters and corporate events throughout the United States and Canada for years, bringing a unique mix of high energy, quick wit and quirky antics when he hits the stage. Most recently, he has appeared on the USA Network TV show " Burn Notice", ABC's "Charlie's Angels", and is the voice of the Offensive Coordinator in the popular Football video game MADDEN 2011.

Cost: Tickets are $15 at the door.

When/Where: 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the in Eagan.

Why Go: Caponi Art Park and Learning Center invites the public to a free, family-friendly open house on Saturday, May 5 from 1-4 p.m. to celebrate the reopening of the park for its 2012 season. Visitors can explore the Art Park, and enjoy ongoing children’s art activities, including mural painting, a snaking community sculpture, and craft scavenger hunt. Caponi Art Park celebrates 20 years of art and nature in 2012. This year’s open house will also serve as an informal celebration of the 20th anniversary. Cake will be served and an exhibition of images from the Art Park’s history will be on display.
