Dakota County COVID Cases: When Can Schools Do In Person Classes?

Recommendations are made based on the number of cases by county over 14 days per 10,000 people.​

EAGAN, MN — School districts across Minnesota are set to begin classes this fall. Depending on the number of reported coronavirus cases in the local county, schools will use distance learning, hybrid, or in-person classes.

Below you will find the Minnesota Department of Health recommendations for number of cases per 10,000 over 14 days (by county):

  • 0-9 cases: In-person learning for all students
  • 10-19 cases: In-person learning for elementary students; hybrid learning for secondary students recommended
  • 20-29 cases: Hybrid learning for all students recommended
  • 30-49 cases: Hybrid learning for elementary students; distance learning for secondary students recommended
  • 50 or more cases: Distance learning for all students recommended

Here is the local COVID-19 case data for Dakota County:

  • July 9: 10.55 (cases per 10,000 people)
  • July 16: 13.30
  • July 23: 15.16
  • July 30: 17.14
  • Aug. 6: 19.34
  • Aug. 13: 21.26
  • Aug. 20: 20.56
  • Aug. 27: 19.63

Dakota County currently qualifies for in-person learning for elementary students and hybrid learning for secondary students.

Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District 196 will start the school year using a hybrid learning model, with a combination of learning at school and from home.

West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools District 197 is starting with distance learning for grades 1 through 12, but will phase into a hybrid model. Kindergarten students will begin class in-person.

Burnsville-Eagan-Savage District 191 will start the fall using the distance learning model, but officials say the plan is to move more grades into the hybrid model "over the course of September."
