Indigenous Group To Demonstrate Lacrosse History At TCO Stadium

Premier Lacrosse League's Week 5 games will feature Anishinabe Baagaadowewin to show how Midwest Tribes traditionally played lacrosse.

EAGAN, MN — Premier Lacrosse League will feature nonprofit corporation Anishinabe Baagaadowewin at its Week 5 Games at TCO Stadium in Eagan Friday through Sunday, the league said.

Anishinabe Baagaadowewin's mission is to share Anishinabe history and culture, the league said. The Anishinabe People have been playing lacrosse for over 500 years, according to the league.

The Anishinabe represents multiple tribal groups including Odawa, Ojibway, Potawatomi, Delaware, Chippewa, Algonquin and Mississauga and Allies, the league said.

Anishinabe Baagaadowewin will lead a partnership with Dakota and Ojibwe members of Lightning Stick Society and Twin Cities Native Lacrosse at this weekend's games to demonstrate how Midwest Tribes traditionally played the game, the league said. The group will also educate spectators on the significance of the wooden lacrosse stick to Indigenous culture and the significance of lacrosse to Indigenous people in the Midwest today, the league said.

Ojibwe and Aamjiwnaang First Nation Member Kyle Jackson will play for Chaos LC during Saturday's 7:45 p.m. game, the league said.

Stick-making, history display and demonstrations will occur 90 minutes before the first game of each day in the Premier Zone, the league said.

"The Premier Lacrosse League has given us the opportunity to bring awareness to the role of the various Indigenous nations have played and continue to play in lacrosse," Isaiah Kicknosway, President and Founder of Anishinabe Baagaadowewin Lacrosse said. "The interest and popularity of lacrosse among Indigenous people has increased exponentially in the last decade throughout North America. We are proud to help the Premier Lacrosse League grow the sport and have Indigenous stories of the game be showcased for all to see."
