The county hit the 70-percent vaccination threshold on June 26. More than 247,500 residents ages 12 and older have received at least one shot, and 66 percent have completed their vaccine series.

COVID-19 vaccines have not yet been approved for children ages 11 and younger.

The vaccines are effective at curbing the spread of COVID-19 and minimizing the seriousness for those who get the virus. The number of COVID-19 cases has dropped as the vaccination rate has increased. The most recent weekly positivity rate was less than 1.5 percent in Dakota County, down from the county's highest-recorded positivity rate of 14.5 percent in November.

Dakota County Public Health has partnered with health care organizations and volunteers to provide more than 68,700 vaccinations. The county launched a mass vaccination clinic this spring at Burnsville's Metcalf Middle School and conducted more than 28,000 vaccinations there before closing June 14. The county has opened two new clinic locations — the Western Service Center in Apple Valley on Wednesdays and the Northern Service Center in West St. Paul on Thursdays.

Public Health hosts mobile clinics, including at apartments, neighborhoods and businesses. So far, more than 930 vaccinations have been provided at 22 mobile clinics. The county also launched at-home vaccinations for people who need to stay at home and are unable to attend a clinic.
