Eagan Remembers 9/11

Residents will also pause to honor those who died, and those who fought to save others' lives, 10 years ago today in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Editor's note: This story ran previously in Eagan Patch. Mike Ferber of Eagan is one of many Minnesota residents who reflected on how the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, changed their lives. We've also linked to the Huffington Post's national 9/11 photo project, as well as coverage from other Minnesota Patch sites. Today, Eagan will also pause for a moment of silence to honor those who 10 years ago died and fought to save others' lives.

Mike Ferber was at his home office in Eagan when planes hit the Twin Towers in New York City.

He and his wife tuned to the news to listen in.

“It was pretty shocking,” Ferber said. “You’ll always remember where you were.”

Until that day, Ferber for many years had a special connection to air travel. He has two grown adopted Korean children, a son and a daughter. Ferber and his wife met their children at the airport.

Increased security measures have damaged his fondness for travel. He now avoids airports when he can.

He said he has a new appreciation for people who serve in the military. He sees police and firefighters in a new light, too. “They risked their lives,” he said.

Ferber hopes more take time to respect and honor those affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He thinks many people have grown complacent in recent years. In the first years after the attacks, few would schedule any important events that day. Many memorials took place.

But now, not as many take time to honor the victims, the heroes and the memories, he said.
