Five By Design’s "Club Swing"

The Minnesota Theatre, The Century, The Bijou Opera House, The Palace Theatre, and The Prom Ballroom... all have disappeared from the Twin Cities' landscape.

Set in the present, the fictional Club Swing is about to face the same fate of those historic buildings. Once the hot spot of the 30s, 40s and 50s,; the club's marquee flickers one last time. From the frenetic-paced opening of Benny Goodman's "Bugle Call Rag" to the blockbuster finale of Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing." Backed by the 8-piece Club Swing Big Band, Five By Design celebrates the songs, events, and personalities that defined American culture to the swing era.

Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Kurt Niska, Terrence Niska, Michael Swedberg, and Sheridan Zuther, the creative talent behind Club Swing, have also produced musical retrospectives of Radio Days, Stay Tuned, Cool and Swingin’ and The Ultra Lounge Show, The Twin Cities-based ensemble has appeared with over 200 symphony orchestras and countless performing arts centers throughout the United States and Canada.

The Washington Post heralded Five By Design’s Kennedy  Center debut with the National Symphony Orchestra as “one of the best performances of the season.” As members of the American Choral Directors Association, Five By Design has published vocal arrangements from the American songbook. As part of their educational mission, the ensemble conducts workshops and seminars for vocal music educators and students.

While the fictional Club Swing was saved from the wrecking ball, many of those venerable buildings from another era are expected to face the same fate. The show highlights the importance of historic preservation in communities throughout the state. If you attend only one event this year, make it Five By Design’s “Club Swing” where the music’s hot, the drinks are cool and the legend lives forever.
