MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL METRO, MN — Something is rotten in the state of Minnesota. Or at least it smells that way. People across the Twin Cities metro noticed a distinct, foul stench wafting through the air Friday.

The good news? That smell isn't coming from something you stepped on. You can't blame the dog either.

Just about every year in the middle and late fall, a stench makes its way around the metro when manure is applied to Minnesota farm fields. Strong winds and dry conditions allow for the manure smell to spread far and wide.

The smell is especially pungent on warmer fall days. Friday's high is in the 80s, so it qualifies.

The smell typically does not last for more than a day or two.
