Read Eagan's Police Blotter For February

February was a busy month for Eagan police. Check out some of the highlights here.

EAGAN, MN — The Eagan Police Department has published its latest blotter. Check out highlights from the month of February below:

Busted scammer

"A 74 year old Eagan resident received a phone call she wasn’t expecting. A man who went by the name “Andy” claimed her computer had been compromised and he needed her to log onto a website to fix the security issue. The woman complied and was promised $200 dollars for the inconvenience. She watched on her monitor as the man pulled up supposed banking apps and deposited the money. The man claimed he made an unfortunate mistake and added too many zeros to her account balance and if she didn’t send the money back she would be in trouble with the IRS. The woman, wanting to do the right thing, sent $19,800 dollars in cash to a California address via FedEx. It wasn’t until the following day she realized this may have been a scam. Eagan Officer Sannes worked quickly to intercept the package before it fell into the scammers hands. Unfortunately, the package had already been delivered to its intended target so Officer Sannes contacted the Orange, California Police Department and coordinated efforts to catch the crooks. Orange Police used the tip from Eagan to arrest a 22 year old man involved in the scam. A warrant was issued on the man’s home and additional packages with large sums of cash were discovered. The mailing addresses were from various parts of the country and it appeared the home was a centralized hub to collect money. Police did not find the Eagan victim’s cash, but through restitution the funds may have a chance of being returned. This was a great example of teamwork amongst law enforcement agencies to stop a criminal operation that had been ruining many peoples lives. Remember, if you receive a call that induces panic or gives a sense of urgency to “act now”, it is most likely a scam. Also, if you ever fall victim to a scam, report it immediately, as funds can be reversed or re-captured if officers are able to investigate immediately."

"Officers responded to a local retail store regarding a theft in progress. A female appeared to be concealing items in her large purse as she shopped and employees believed she was going to leave the store without paying for the concealed items. Officers observed the female’s male friend leave the store and get into a vehicle. He continued to circle the parking lot until the female exited. She quickly got into the vehicle and they attempted to leave the area. Officers stopped the vehicle after it made an illegal turn. In speaking with the female, she provided a fake name to officers. After a short investigation, officers discovered her true identity and learned she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. She was also in possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers located the stolen merchandise in the vehicle. She was arrested and taken into custody for theft, providing a false name to officers, possession of drug paraphernalia, and for her outstanding warrant. She was taken to the Dakota County Jail."

Cars Stolen

"On a recent, very cold winter morning, our officers responded to three separate reports of motor vehicles being stolen from the reporting party’s driveway. All three victims reported their vehicles were left unattended while they were warming them up before leaving for work. It is unknown if the three cases are related, but they all occurred within a few miles of each other. We are happy to report that all three vehicles have since been recovered, with one of them resulting in the arrest of a suspect. We realize with the cold temperatures it is nice to be able to warm your vehicle up prior to driving it, but this is a good reminder that this makes it a perfect crime of opportunity for those thieves out there. It is also against Eagan city ordinance to leave a vehicle running while unattended."

"Eagan officers learned a male who had several outstanding warrants for his arrest and was also a suspect in a recent shooting in another city was staying at a local hotel . After several hours of surveillance, the US Marshal Service arrived and continued monitoring the hotel room. Eventually, three occupants left the room, including the suspect male. Officers and Marshals lost sight of the male and checked the area. He was later found to have enjoyed a continental breakfast at a nearby hotel he was not staying at and was then tracked by footprints in the snow to his location. The male led officers on a short foot pursuit, but was quickly apprehended by US Marshals. The other two occupants of the room were also arrested for drug possession and warrants following a traffic stop. A great example of teamwork by multiple agencies to get a violent offender off the streets!"
